Sunday 19th August      Beinn Dorain (3524’)

Leaders: Glip and Peter Bennett

Scout: Graeme Wright

Weather:  Clear but cloudy with sunny periods. Very warm.

Report

In the morning, when we woke up, Glip thought that Robbie had measles as his face was covered in red spots from midge bites.

After breakfast, Rivet declared that he was not feeling well. Robbie and Robert were not altogether on top of the world either. The weather was so good, though, that Peter and Graeme decided to climb Beinn Dorain. On the way to the mountain, we stopped at the Bridge of Orchy hotel and enquired about a doctor for Rivet. The hotel was the centre of mountain rescue operations in this area and had a wireless transmitter. They kindly arranged an appointment with a doctor in Dalmally.

The next stop was at the brideg near Auch at grid reference 325355. Peter and Graeme set off to climb Beinn Dorain at 11:15 AM. Glip drove the others to Dalmally where Rivet was diagnosed as having a viryl cold and was given some tablets. We drove back to Tyndrum where the scouts sunbathed and read commandos for the rest of the afternoon.

Glip met Peter and Graeme at Beinn Dorain. They had reached the top at 1:25 PM after a very hot tiring climb up the south bluff, taking two hours and 10 minutes. Not stopping for lunch, they returned the way they come and reached the cars at 2:45 PM. Neither were particularly impressed with Beinn Dorain, at least from that route.

After some lunch and change of clothing, we returned to Tyndrum and spent a while in the restaurant. Just as we were about to leave, we spied two or three bread boards been thrown out on a rubbish dump. What a waste we thought, so Percy gained a sun hat for the journey home. Peter drove behind so that he could catch the ‘sun hat’ if it fell off!
