Weather

The day was cloudy with a fresh cold wind from the East but dry. The weather deteriorated as the day went on with driving snow on high ground over 1000 feet.

Report

This was the first official Everest ascent and there was a large number of budding climbers on Gourock pier at 9:30 AM.

We caught the 9.45am ferry(Caledonian MacBrayne) to Dunoon and followed the signposts to Bishops Glen stopping at two sweet shops en route which did not stop Yorkies, much to Raljex’s dismay and disgust. We passed three reservoirs (Papa, mama and baby) which were all frozen over and made good time along the forestry track which was not marked on the map to the end of the first stage at grid reference 143768.

The second stage involved a short steep climb to the top of the ridge. From there we walked three quarters of a mile by compass bearing through the snow to the summit, where it was blowing a gale. After a photo, we hurried back against the wind, following our foot prints and not stopping until we reached the forestry track again, where we had lunch.

We made a short cut avoiding the loop in the track and hightailed into Dunoon just to miss the 2.15 p.m. ferry. Therefore, everybody explored Dunoon, which essentially meant visiting the amusements arcade.

Incidentally, some CAD pinched the bit of a ice that Rivet was taking home as a souvenir of Bishop’s seat!
