Report

John Tait and Alan Roach drove today. We stopped at Tyndrum for tea, then parked in Glenorchy at the car park at grid reference 240277. We crossed the stream in goodish weather and followed the railway to a bridge at grid reference 240276. From here, there was a path along the north bank of Eas Daimh. However, we cut off this eventually to cross the stream and follow a firebreak towards Beinn a’ Chleibh. The ascent of this mountain was steep and at times scrambly. In contrast, the summit was flat and there was some doubt as to which of many cairns was the summit. We decided that one close to some weather recording instrument was probably the one. It was cloudy over the summit by now, so we descended North East to have lunch in the saddle or, at least, on the north slopes of it to avoid a moderate southerly wind which was  chilly.

We debted throughout lunch whether to go up Ben Lui or not. Shrew, of course, was definitely for Ben Lui and was even suggesting Ben Oss and Beinn Dubhchraig.  The clouds were lifting and the weather getting brighter, so we carried on and attained Ben Lui where Derek was awarded his Everest. The clouds failed to rise completely off the summit, unfortunately, so we left, descending the North East shoulder for fun and then traversing round Ben Lui’s north slopes. There were still some Alpine flowers in evidence and Glip got left behind whilst photographing them.

Glip met up with the others relaxing in the sunshine by Eas Daimh. The three Scouts proceeded to explore the stream while Glip waited at the railway bridge and the others went back to the cars. By the time the Scouts had finished and we had returned, Colin and Mr Roach had left, so we all fitted into John’s car and headed home, looking jealously at Ben Lui which was now bathed in sunshine.
