Report

It had been had decided a few weeks previously that it was worth repeating an Everest year since everyone who had taken part in the 1979 challenge was now out of the Troop. This climb was to be the first. It was also decided to try running the Everest year as a Scout year this time so that the first few climbs would be in the Autumn rather than Winter. Glip and John Tait were already in Dunoon and met the Scouts off the Dunoon boat. However, attendance was down due to illness.

Getting up Cruach Neuran was easy enough* and we decided that there was plenty of time to go on to Cruach nan Capull. Despite some grumbling as we tackled the last bit up to the latter hill, we made it there in good time and got rewarded with a tremendous view of Arran etc to the south.

Instead of returning the way we had come, we descended Corrachaive Glen towards Glen Lean and followed the concrete water chute leading into Loch Tarsan. This involved crossing some viaducts doing  a balancing act along the narrow edge. Great concentration was observed on all faces during this process.

During the descent, Booboo was tested on trees and received a multitude of clouts every time he got it wrong. We also had a moss fight earlier on.

And so we returned home, with the first official Everest climb safely achieved**.  Note that Richard Teddy was elected as ‘geologist’.

Subsequent notes

* The route taken during the ascent of Cruach Neuran was directly up from Loch Tarsan, but this route is no longer feasible due to forestry plantations. One of the slides has evidence of planting at the time.

** This was the first ‘official’ Everest ascent of the year, but Booboo was allowed to count his ascent of the Cruachan ridge the previous month, as long as he stopped the challenge one month earlier than the rest of the Everesters.
