Report
The day dawned gloomily with clouds down over the summits. There was a slow, inefficient preparation as if we were hoping that delaying the issue would improve conditions. There were several problems today. Firstly, Peasant was not well and appeared to be suffering after-effects from yesterday. This meant him staying in camp which meant leaders staying with him. Guy and Rivet quickly volunteered. Glip drove into Capel Curig for Lucozade, Guy’s Times and other items. Guy at this time was doing the Times Shares competition – Accumulator(?) – really a posh man’s Bingo - and this caused great excitement throughout camp - especially for Roderick. Great cheers at camp always meant Guy had got a good score.
The next problem was the CSA hikers. Would they go up along their original route considering the low cloud, or take the low route? Glip was slightly concerned about them going the high route, since it would be easy to make a navigational error.
Therefore, Glip dropped the main party at Tal-y-Llyn Ogwen and once they had set off he hiked up to the reservoir to see if he could find any sign of the hikers, then ascending Carnedd Llewelyn to arrive at 1 PM. Cloud level was about 800 m and there was a cold wind on top. Glip then met up with the main party descending Carnedd Dafydd with Roderick navigating very competently. Everyone was in good spirits and we made rapid progress back to Carnedd Llewelyn. As well as navigating ourselves along the mountain, our group had been keeping another group right as well.
Lunch was held on the ridge descending from Llewelyn and then we paused at the top of the path down to the reservoir debating whether to do Pen-y-Hely-Du as well. We decided against it and sped down to the reservoir. A road race developed back to the bus.
Back at camp, we learnt there had been an earthquake and Guy managed to convince everyone that a crack had appeared alongside the Scouters’ tents. Peasant had been busy as well, planning a plate golf course. We had tea, then Tommy and Glip drove away to check up on the CSA hikers.
They were camped by the Afon Anafon GR674714 on a splendid site - a bit like Blairmore Farm. They were cooking when Glip and Tommy arrived as dusk was falling. To our surprise, they had been over the tops, leaving camp at 11 and reaching Carnedd Llyellyn at about 1 o’clock - just missed Glip by 5 to 10 minutes! They were congratulated them on their navigation and stamina.
Back at camp, an apparently exciting game of plate golf was coming to a close by torchlight when we arrived back.
